Our Ninth Annual Charity Golf Event was held on Friday June 15, 2012 at The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club in Chapel Hill, NC. Teams joined basketball legend Walter Davis and raised over $28,000 to benefit The Foundation in its mission to assist families who are moving from public housing to private homeownership.

The night before the golf tournament, a reception and silent auction was held at Brier Creek Country Club with Ken Medlin of WRAL as Emcee.  Lonetta Love, a 2011 recipient of the Foundation’s down payment assistance program, was the keynote speaker. Prior to purchasing her Habitat for Humanity built home in Graham, NC, she had lived in public housing for four years with her three children. Love expressed her thanks to donors for sponsoring part of her down payment enabling her to pay for fixtures to her new home, transferring utilities and moving expenses.

“I just celebrated my one-year anniversary in my new home and would like to commend The Banks Foundation for giving families like mine the opportunity to be able to purchase a new home,” said Ms. Love. “The Banks Foundation was a huge blessing at a time of need, and I sleep much better at night now knowing that my children are safe thanks to this great organization.”

The golf tournament began the next day with 90 golfers taking the course, including 20 golfers from area high schools, as well as celebrity players Phil Ford and Walter P. Davis.

Awards were handed out for the first, second and third place winning teams in an Open Flight, a High School Flight and a Senior Flight.  Awards were also distributed for closest to the pin and longest drives. Two raffles were awarded, one in cash and the other as a trip to Las Vegas.

“We are so pleased about how the support and participation has grown for this event,” said Sherrod Banks, President of the Foundation. “We are thankful for our sponsors and players who give so much time and money to our cause of helping these families achieve the American Dream of home ownership.”
